Linksys extender setup using range extender mode

  • Start by plugging the Linksys RE6800 into a power outlet. Wait until the LED changes to orange.
  • With the help of any computer or mobile device, you can connect the device to Linksys RE6800’s default SSID. It is Linksys Extender Setup – xxx. The xxx denotes the last three characters of the Linksys RE6800’S MAC address. This address is located at the back of the label of the device.
  • After opening any compatible browser, you can enter the default gateway http://extender.linksys.com or the default IP address 192.168.1.1 in the address bar to open the setup wizard.
  • Please tick the box I accept the End User License Agreement and click Start Setup when the setup screen appears.
  • After creating an admin password and password hint(optional), you can click on Save once finished.
  • Choose As a wireless range extender option and click Next.
  • After choosing the existing wireless network, enter the password when prompted. In case you possess the dual-band network, you should see the SSID of the band.
  • If you have the hidden SSID, click Manually Enter Network Name and Password. You can also wait until it detects the wireless network automatically. You can choose the network now.
  • Lastly, create the extended Network names and wireless passwords. You can also click the refresh icon and update the list. This is the same wireless network your clients will connect to. You can use the same name here for both networks.

Locating the range extender

  • With the in-built Spot finder feature, you can determine the signal strength of the Linksys RE6800 to the root AP. You can unplug it and move it closer if it’s far away. Now reconnect the extender’s default SSID and visit ap.linksys.com.
  • The device will automatically check for the latest firmware version available and update it.

  • Please tick the box I accept the End User License Agreement and click Start Setup when the setup screen appears. The Automatic Software Updates are checked by default. You can also choose Manual setup to bypass your setup wizard.
  • You can create your admin password and the password hint. Now click on Save.
  • Choose As a wired range extender (Access point) option and click Next. You can also explore the option by clicking on the blue drop-down arrow. If you haven’t connected an ethernet cable from the extender to a router, it will prompt you to connect and retry.
  • Finally, you can customize the wireless network name and choose a security mode. Now, create your wireless password. Click Next once you are finished.

  • Open any compatible browser and type in extender.linksys.com in the browser’s address bar and press enter. But, also remember to connect to the SSID of the Linksys RE6800.
  • Input http://RE6800-xxx for the Windows user. This is the MAC address located on the back label of the device. In case you changed it previously, then enter the custom name.
  • Enter the IP address of Linksys RE6800.
  • You will be prompted for the administrative password. Enter the default ‘admin’ and press Login.
